Asexual reproduction is a method of reproduction where a single parent creates an offspring that is genetically identical to the parent.

Advantages over sexual reproduction Edit

When reproducing asexually, only one parent plant is required. Many offspring are typically produced and in a shorter time required than sexual reproduction. Asexual reproduction is advantageous in a stable environment.

Asexual reproduction in a potato plant Edit

First, a seed potato is planted in the ground. This has already sprouted to form “eyes” extruding from the potato. Using energy from the carbohydrates from the potato the shoot and roots grow out of the potato, their direction determined by negative and positive geotropism, respectably. When the shoot reaches the surface, phototropism is also used. On the stem grow leaves, which provide a source of energy for the potato plant by photosynthesis. Underground stems grow out of the potato. Swellings occur; these swellings are called tubers and are a sink of sugars from the plant (in the form of sucrose/starch). This tuber grows over time to produce a potato. Many tubers, and thus potatoes may grow from one seed potato. These potatoes can, in time, sprout and create more potatoes.
