Coasts are the areas of land that are next to the sea.

The Coast as a SystemEdit

Affecting factors (inputs)Edit

  • Flovial sediment
  • Cliff sediment
  • Energy - (waves) and wind
  • Beach sediment

Coastal FloodingEdit

This can have a big impact on people living near coasts. There are two main examples.

Floods of Missisipi and Bangladesh.

Bangladesh: 1998. Caused by deforestation and global warming. $1,000,000,000 of damage and over 1,000,000 left homeless. Solutions include dams and undermountain storage systems.

Missisipi: 1993. Caused by storms and heavy rain. $10,000,000,000 of damage. 240 people killed. Solutions include hard engineering solutions such as dredgings and artificial levees.

Human uses of coastsEdit

Human activity can interfere with the coastal systems.

Coastal managementEdit

Humans build coastal protection in order to reduce erosion. There are two mains types of coastal: Hard engineerings solutions and soft solutions. Soft Solutions: Not building on land close to the coast, beach replenishment. Hard Solutions:Curved sea walls (absorve the energy of the waves) and Groynes

Oil spillsEdit

These can have a large impact on the coastal system, as many birds and other coastal animals can be killed.

TourismEdit

Case Study: Blackpool CoastEdit

Blackpool is a coastal resort, in the north west of England. However, Blackpool has many problems:

  • Unemployment during off season times
  • Unreliability of British weather drives people to foreign resorts
  • Land, air, water pollution
  • Coping with coastal erosion
  • Beach and resorts become dirty
  • Overcrowding
    • Congestion
    • Parking
  • Crime

However, Blackpool has attempted to stop these problems with Park and Ride scemes, litter pickers and bins, more police and a casino in order to make people come in the winter, and to reduce beach overcrowding. The Pepsi Max (rollercoaster) has been built for similar reasons. Beach replishment has been introduced to reduce coastal erosion and they have obtianed the EU blue flag award to attract more tourists who would generally opt for holidays abroad.
