Combustion is the reaction between a fuel and an oxidant (usually oxygen). This is an exothermic reaction, and usually gives off heat or heat and light in the form of flames.

Incomplete CombustionEdit

Here when a hydrocarbon is burned in air, carbon monoxide and water are given off.

Example: methane + oxygen --> water + carbon monoxide

Complete CombustionEdit

With the same reaction (a hydrocarbon burnt in air), carbon dioxide and water are given off.

Example: methane + oxygen --> water + carbon dioxide
