In chemistry, cracking is the thermal decomposition of a (large) alkane molecule into a smaller alkane and a (small) alkene by heat. Generally, this reaction takes place at very high temperatures and often in the presence of a catalyst (aluminium oxide or silicon dioxide, as well as many others). Without a catalyst, enormous temperatures and pressures must be used. The former is called catalytic cracking, the latter thermal cracking.
