In hydrology, discharge is the volume of water transported by the river in an amount of time (usually seconds). The usual unit is m3/s or cumecs. The equation used to calculate discharge is:

discharge = cross sectional area * average linear velocity

As the river gets further from the source, the discharge will increase.
