Distance is a measure of how long something is. It can be measured in many units, the most common of which you will come across at GCSE are millimetre (mm), centimetre (cm), metre (m) and kilometre (km).

The most common means of measuring a distance is using a ruler, although if you are measuring a rounded object, you can use a piece of string and then place it against a ruler. If you want to measure a short distance, such as the thickness of a piece of paper, you can measure the thickness of, for example 500 sheets of paper, and then divide the distance by the number of sheets.
