Kinetic energy is a form of energy all bodies have when moving. Unless at absolute zero, all particles have kinetic energy. The formula for kinetic energy is 0.5*mass*velocity^2.

If an object is dropped form a height then, just before it hits the ground, it is said that K.E.=G.P.E. where the gravitational potential energy at the beginning, G.P.E.=mgh, is equal to the kinetic energy just before it hits the surface 0.5*mass*velocity^2. This can be used to find the speed of an object or the height from which it was dropped.
