A taxis is a movement in response to a stimulus, in which the direction of movement is determined by the direction of the stimulus. For example, maggots show a negative phototaxis (i.e. they move away from light). There are several prefixes, to tell us what the stimulus is.

  • Photo- = light
  • Geo- = gravity
  • Chemo- = chemicals
